Tosa Bichotan, also known as Tosa White Charcoal, is a type of high-quality charcoal traditionally produced in the Tosa region of Kochi Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its purity, density, and unique properties. The production of Tosa Bichotan has a long history, dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868).

  1. High Carbon Content: Tosa Bichotan has a high carbon content, typically above 90%, which contributes to its efficient and long-lasting burning properties.

  2. Purity: The production process involves burning wood at a high temperature in kilns with controlled airflow. This process removes impurities and volatile compounds, leaving behind a pure charcoal product.

  3. Hardness: Tosa Bichotan is known for its hardness, making it durable and resistant to crumbling. It can be ground into a fine powder without breaking apart easily.

  4. High Temperature: It can reach high temperatures quickly, making it suitable for various applications, such as cooking, heating, and even water purification.

  5. Water Purification: Tosa Bichotan is often used for water purification due to its porous structure. When immersed in water, it can adsorb impurities and release minerals, resulting in improved water quality.

  6. Cooking and Grilling: Tosa Bichotan is prized for its use in traditional Japanese cooking, such as grilling and barbecuing. Its high heat and low smoke properties make it ideal for these culinary applications.

  7. Air Purification: Some people use Tosa Bichotan as an air purifier, claiming that it can absorb and neutralize odors and harmful substances in the air.

While Tosa Bichotan is a traditional and high-quality charcoal, it is important to note that it can be relatively expensive compared to other types of charcoal. Its unique properties and applications make it a sought-after product for those who appreciate its craftsmanship and performance.

How to keep Binchotan charcoal:

Keep it Dry:

Binchotan charcoal is porous and can absorb moisture easily. To maintain its quality, store it in a dry place. Avoid exposure to rain or humid conditions. If binchotan charcoal gets wet, allow it to dry completely before using it. You can do this by placing it in direct sunlight or a dry, well-ventilated area.

Use a Ventilated Container:

Store in a container that allows for ventilation. A breathable bag or a mesh container is ideal. Avoid using airtight containers, as they may trap moisture and affect the charcoal's quality.

Store in a Cool Place:

While it is not sensitive to temperature changes like some other charcoals, storing it in a cool place can help prevent it from becoming overly brittle
